Being Realistic

Motivational writers and speakers have been in great demand around the world. Tips from them are being used in personality development, career oriented programmes and so on. Motivational books easily find their way into the bestsellers' lists. Many a time, motivational ideas get packaged as spiritual thoughts. If you write or speak in the motivational mould, chances are that you will instantly get noticed or become more popular. It has become a fashion among politicians to sound motivational in their speeches both inside and outside the law making houses.

I for one think that too much motivational stuff of the current genre may derail the process of logical analysis and rational thinking. It may jeopardize the formulation of action plans, as people, influenced by superfluous philosophical precepts fail to see realities as they are. Lack of a proper and realistic vision causes faulty decision making as the mind is prejudiced and biased. When fanciful ideas are programmed into the mind, perception becomes blurred and, as a result, the right action does not come forth. And mind you, the failure to think properly blocks the progress of individuals, societies and nations alike.

Having said that, I am not rejecting motivational ideas as mere balderdash fit only for the intellectual dustbin. They have been there since the pre-historical times when the ancient scriptures were being written. They have inspired people and events. Motivating words have often uplifted sagging souls and turned near and total failures into success stories. But, then such effective words were and are founded in realistic perceptions. Here, may I remind that realistic approach to a problem can not be termed pessimistic! It's just the opposite. The tag, pessimistic, can only be attached with an approach that does not consider realities. As the realist understands the tumbler is half full and half empty, he knows what action needs to be taken- to pour more water into it to make it full.

So, what I am trying to say is that there is no need to do away with motivational speeches or writings; however, any unrealistic perspectives camouflaged as motivational thoughts should be got rid of. Yes, we should dream; but, only those dreams that we can make come true. Our goals as individuals, societies and nations should be practical and achievable. Hence, we ought to be cautious lest we get carried away by plain wishful thinking. Treat with disdain any shallow thought that does not work. (As the run of the mill Bollywood theme does not.) One more thing: motivational thoughts pertaining to nation building should not border on jingoism; they should remain only patriotic.

Let us discard all negative and anti-human thoughts that cloud our views. Even as medieval notions in the name of religion and politics put roadblocks in our path to productivity and prosperity, let us think in the most correct manner. As a good tree produces good fruit, right thinking produces right actions. Propriety in thoughts drifts towards enlightenment leaving no room for obscurantism. And that is positive thinking.

To correct the thought process, a reality check is mandatory. It may be disturbing; but, the result will be rewarding and perpetual. Feel good factors fade away without leaving any worthwhile impact. Therefore, we have to pursue real and long lasting things and remain realistic. And optimistic as well!
